The Canadian Pharmaceutical Bar Coding Project:
Its importance to improving the medication system and enhancing patient safety
Webinar
Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 12 noon EST
This webinar will provide an overview of:
- The Canadian Pharmaceutical Bar Coding Project;
- The GS1 global standard for Automated Identification (i.e. bar coding), and existing uses;
- The key elements of Joint Technical Statement affecting healthcare practices in both institutional and community/retail environments;
- The potential future impact of the adopted standard on patient safety and systems in Canada at multiple points of the medication chain;
- Next steps for Phase III (Dissemination and Stakeholder Engagement) and Phase IV will be outlined, as well as ideas for individual and organizational support for this national initiative; and
- How individual practitioners can support the success of this national initiative
Analysis of medication incidents has led to recommendations that healthcare strategically plan for implementation of advanced technologies such as prescriber order entry, and electronic medication administration records, bar code verification at the point of care, and for high-risk dispensing and compounding in pharmacy. Bar coding, when integrated with other advanced technologies, can serve as an automated, reliable, and independent double check.
Until recently, however, there has been no accepted pan-Canadian standard for bar codes on commercial pharmaceuticals creating immense challenges for organizations that wished to devleop or acquire this technology. This webinar will provide an overview of the Canadian Pharmaceutical Barcoding Project including a review of the GSI global standard for automated identification and the 'key elements' of the joint technical statement. Participants will learn how the adopted standard will impact the medication patient safety supply chain and systems both in institutions and community pharmacies and how individual practitioners can support the success of this national initiative.
Background:
The Canadian Pharmaceutical Bar Coding Project
In 2008, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices Canada (ISMP Canada) in partnership with the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI) convened a national roundtable in Ottawa. The purpose of the meeting was to determine the need for a national medication bar code standard to enhance patient medication safety, while maintaining supply-chain effectiveness, in a manner similar to health system review processes occurring in other countries. The roundtable participants, by consensus, agreed Canada must also expeditiously review its own needs for automated medication identification.
A national Implementation Committee of leading representative organizations from the health sector was established to advise on the process of adoption and implementation of national automated identification (bar coding) standards. This process has become the Canadian Pharmaceutical Bar Coding Project, which is currently in Phase III of IV planned phases. As part of phase II deliverables, a national Joint Technical Statement on Pharmaceutical Automated Identification and Product Database Requirements was released.
This statement describes the technical requirements for all Canadian healthcare sectors, and establishes a pathway for the pan-Canadian integration of GS1 bar coding standards into professional practices, at all stages of the medication chain.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will understand:
- The rationale for a national bar coding standard;
- What the GS1 global standard for automated identification is and how it is currently used;
- How the joint technical standard will affect healthcare practices in institutions and community pharmacies;
Audience:
This presentation will be of primary interest to Canadian healthcare practitioners practicing in either institutions or within the community/retail setting who are interested in an 'overview of the standards' related to implementation of bar code technology e.g. Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, Registered Nurses, Quality and Risk specialists, Materials Management staff, Information System specialists. It may also be useful to healthcare organizations whose mandate includes supporting medication practices and enhancement of patient safety.
