Work interruptions during medication administration: How risky are they?

ISMP Canada is very pleased to have Dr. Alain Biron discuss the relationship between work interruptions and medication errors.

This one hour webinar will provide an overview of the recent research evidence on predictors of medication administration errors, with a particular focus on work interruptions. The results of a recent study completed by Dr. Biron and colleagues will be presented. The possible implications of the study findings as they related to nurses' work environment will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this webinar participants will be understand:

  • the state of current research evidence linking work interruptions, workload, medication administration complexity and overtime to medication administration errors;
  • the extend to which work interruptions increase medication administration errors; and
  • the main sources of nurses' work interruptions during medication administration.


Audience: Nurses, physicians, pharmacists, clinical directors, quality/risk managers and others with an interest in medication system safety.

Dr. Alain Biron, inf., M.Sc., Ph.D

Alain is a performance evaluation advisor for the department of quality, risk and performance and at the Transition Office at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) and assistant professor at the School of Nursing, McGill University. He recently completed a doctorate in nursing, with a thesis on medication errors. He is currently the Philip Hassen Fellow in Patient Safety from the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI).
