ISMP Canada reminds healthcare practitioners that certain oral medications require administration with an adequate quantity of water or other appropriate fluid. This is an important consideration when administering medications with the potential to cause esophageal or gastric irritation or ulcers. Dosing schedules or routes of administration may require adjustment in advance of procedures that require withholding of food and water or for patients who will be lying down for an extended period.
